Is there any way I can override these settings. I'm in South Africa, so the date format defaults to yyyy/mmm/dd, whereas I would prefer dd/mm/yyyy, and the decimal indicator defaults to a comma, whereas I would prefer a fullstop.

The format is dictated by what you have your: Settings (app) -> General -> International -> Region Format

Since we cannot know what a given country needs to be set for, and the iOS does, we let the OS do all the formatting.  You could change the Region format to US if you wanted to, but keep in mind that it will change that for every program on the device.  But perhaps that is what you would want anyway?
